PS01 - Novel Methods of Suicide: Current Landscape Across Four Continents and Recommendations for the Future

The Kenneth Law Media Event - A Dangerous Natural Experiment
August, 28 | 17:00 - 18:30

In April 2023, the international media reported the arrest and criminal charges against Kenneth Law, a Canadian man accused of sending a deadly substance (sodium nitrite) to individuals across Canada and internationally. Given its international scope, the Kenneth Law media event was widely reported across many countries including variable adherence to responsible media reporting guidelines and engagement with experts in suicide and the media. On one hand, the story itself had some of the hallmarks of what tends to be a safer suicide-related story in that the narrative was that it was wrong for Law to, allegedly, assist someone’s suicide. On the other hand, many members of the press, particularly in Canada, repeatedly described the novel suicide method in detail, raising concerns about the story increasing the cognitive availability of this previously obscure suicide method. This lecture will begin with a description of how novel suicide methods have evolved in Canada over time including by sodium nitrite for context. It will then discuss both some promising reporting on the Kenneth Law story but also concerning aspects of the media event. It will then offer recommendations include enhanced efforts to liaise with and educate journalists regarding the importance of careful reporting about novel methods as well as enhanced engagement between suicide prevention experts and national media councils, and intervention to educate data custodians.
