Suicidality Among Professionals Working In Mental Health And Social Care Settings In Switzerland
August, 29 | 08:30 - 10:00

Introduction: Health and social work professionals (HSPs) have higher suicide rates than other professions or the general population. However, there is still a paucity of data on this subject. Aim: To better understand HSPs suicidality by identifying, dimensions, factors, signs and characteristics associated with HSPs suicidality; to identify profiles of at-risk HSPs; to identify the processes which lead to HSPs suicidality; to identify supports (needed or wished) for suicidal HSPs. Methods: This is a mixed-method study, conducted through semi-structured interviews and an online questionnaire. A variety of variables are investigated; personal and psychological (e.g. socio-demographic characteristics, current and past mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, burnout, previous exposure to suicide or violence, life events) as well as social factors (e.g. relational issues within staff, work environment) about the suicidality of HSPs. Participants are physicians, psychologists, psychotherapists, nurses and allied health professionals, community health and social workers, and other professionals in this field, in 7 Swiss states (Berne, Fribourg, Neuchâtel, Ticino, Valais, Vaud, Zürich) and within two national umbrella associations (Swiss Nurses Association ; Avenir social, national association of social workers). Results: Data collection is still in progress and will end in May 2024. So far, 43 semi-structured interviews have been carried out (30 women) and 2218 respondents filled in the online questionnaire (74% women, mean age is 41). At the ESSSB20 in Rome, preliminary results, mostly drawn from the interviews, will be presented. Conclusion: Results will inform targeted prevention and support measures, tailored to the situation of the HSPs and their level of risk. The results will also be used in awareness-raising events or for training or education in specific curricula or within institutions about suicide prevention at the workplace.
