PS12 - Suicidal Behaviors and Bereavement Anniversary Reactions: From Knowledge to Prevention

A Psychoanalytic Perspective on Suicide Risk Around Anniversaries
August, 29 | 08:30 - 10:00

Aims: Our study reviews psychoanalytic literature on mourning and loss, leading to the creation of a conceptual model that explicates the heightened risk associated with the anniversaries of such losses. Methods: We reviewed psychoanalytic literature focusing on loss and mourning, constructing a theoretical framework that connects psychiatric illness and suicidality with loss events. This framework was published in Advances in Psychiatric Treatment in January 2023 (https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/bjpsych-advances/article/mourning-process-and-its-importance-in-mental-illness-a-psychoanalytic-understanding-of-psychiatric-diagnosis-and-classification/AADC76B72F52556A897A41B131A25D37). The framework was further refined through an analysis of current literature on anniversary reactions in case studies. We will also discuss potential interventions that could mitigate this increased risk. Results and Conclusion: The psychoanalytic literature provides a robust framework for understanding the increased suicide risk during anniversaries of significant losses. This understanding is crucial for developing targeted interventions and support strategies.
