Mental Health Promotion and Intervention in Occupational Settings: MENTUPP
August, 29 | 12:00 - 13:00

Introduction: The workplace is a priority context for implementing mental health promotion programmes within a proactive and preventative approach to suicide prevention. Furthermore, workers within certain sectors, in particular construction, health and information and communications technology (ICT), are at an increased risk of mental health difficulties and suicidal behaviour. More specifically, workers within small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) may be particularly vulnerable. The capacity to provide mental health interventions and address mental health promotion within their workplace may be limited. At a population level, potential exists to have an impact within the European context, as more than 90% of all businesses are SMEs.
Aim: Mental Health Promotion and Intervention in Occupational Settings, MENTUPP, was a Horizon 2020 EU-funded project that spanned four years and recently concluded in December 2023. An international consortium comprised of 18 interdisciplinary partners across 11 European countries, Australia and the USA worked towards the primary aim to improve workplace mental health and a secondary aim to reduce depression and suicidal behaviour in employees and managers in SMEs.
Methods: A multi-level intervention aimed at promoting mental wellbeing in the workplace, addressing clinical (depression and anxiety disorders) and non-clinical mental health issues (stress, burnout, wellbeing, depressive symptoms) and reducing associated stigma in SMEs was developed. The MENTUPP intervention was delivered through an online platform, the MENTUPP Hub, that tailored interactive psychoeducational materials, toolkits, and links to additional resources for employees and managers. The MENTUPP intervention has been pilot tested, optimised, and subsequently evaluated in a cluster Randomised Controlled Trial (cRCT) in the three occupational sectors in eight European countries and Australia.
Results: Overarching findings from the project and lessons learned from the implementation and evaluation of mental health promotion interventions in the workplace will be shared.

Conclusions: Insights from MENTUPP will provide practical recommendations to support upstream approaches to mental health promotion and suicide prevention in the workplace.
