PS24 - Interventions and Management of Suicidal Behaviour in Later Life

Innovative Technology for Suicide Prevention in Aging Adults
August, 29 | 17:30 - 19:00

Introduction: Technology may be used to effectively reduce suicide risk in middle-aged and older adults. Mobile devices (e.g., smartphone or tablet) provide a unique and powerful opportunity to deliver interventions to suicidal individuals during periods of increased suicide risk. Based on our theory of suicide prevention that suicidal ideation and behaviour result from ineffective ways to overcome an emotional storm, we developed WellPATH, a personalized tablet app aimed to reduce negative emotions and suicidal ideation associated with these emotional storms. Aim: The presentation will focus on the theory and development of WellPATH and on feasibility, acceptability, and effectiveness of WellPATH in reducing negative emotions and suicidal ideation in aging adults who have recently been hospitalized for suicidality. Methods: WellPATH incorporates emotion regulation techniques that have been created by the patient and the therapist. The patient uses the app during emotional storms associated with increase in suicidal ideation in real-time. We examined the effects of WellPATH from a recent study in a sample of 40 middle-aged and older adults (mean age=62 years old) after discharge from a suicide-related hospitalization, a period of high suicide risk. Assessments of emotion regulation, suicidal ideation, and depression were collected at discharge, and 6 and 12 weeks after discharge. Results: We will present: a) the theoretical rationale and the development of WellPATH; b) feasibility and acceptability data; c) effects of WellPATH use in decreasing negative emotions, improving emotion regulation, and decreasing suicidal ideation within 3 months after discharge from a suicide-related hospitalization. We also present recent developments in the app that were recommended by patients and therapists. Conclusion: WellPATH is an innovative tablet app that has the potential to reduce negative emotions and suicidal ideation in aging adults at high suicide risk.
