Suicide Prevention in Germany: Current Status and Recommendations for a National StrategyIntroduction: In July 2023, more than 99 per cent of the members of the German parliament voted for a motion for a resolution on suicide prevention. Methods: In August 2023, at the suggestion of the Federal Ministry of Health, a meeting of experts was held, in which key recommendations for a national suicide prevention strategy were developed. These recommendations are based on a study funded by the Federal Ministry of Health on the current status and prospects of suicide prevention in Germany. As early as 2022, a broad alliance of specialist organizations in Germany had issued well-founded expert recommendations for legal regulations on suicide prevention. Results: The experts developed several significant recommendations: The establishment and adequate funding of a central information and coordination centre for suicide prevention with a telephone hotline (24/7) was seen as a matter of priority for the promotion of suicide prevention in Germany. This is inextricably linked to the maintenance, expansion, networking and adequate funding of qualified regional, low-threshold suicide prevention services (including telephone and online services), including for bereaved families and relatives of suicidal people. Conclusion: The planning, organization, and implementation of the recommendations are associated with many challenges. Strategies already established in other countries can serve as models for elements of a national suicide prevention strategy in Germany.
