August, 30 | 08:30 - 10:00

Background: Death by assisted suicide or euthanasia is a frequent topic of political and ethical debate. While the debate about assisted suicide mostly focuses on the dying person, there are only few studies investigating the consequences of assisted dying on the bereaved family members. The aim of the study was to analyze the reasons for family members seeking counseling before and after assisted dying of their family member and to assess their psychosocial burdens. Methods: Consecutive new referrals were tracked over 1 year. Participants completed a demographic survey, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ), International Trauma Questionnaire (ITQ) and questions regarding the assisted suicide of their family member. Further, individuals were asked to provide feedback on the perceived quality of the services provided. Results: Results of the quantitative and qualitative analysis will be presented and the role of the family members before and after the death of a close person by assisted dying will be evaluated. Further, clinical and practical recommendations for action will be given. Conclusion: The perspective of relatives in relation to the current debate of assisted dying will be discussed. Further research is needed to develop appropriate support for bereaved family members at different stages of the process of assisted dying.
