OC15 - Crisis Helplines

When Capacity Fails in the Helpline Who Gets the Call?
August, 30 | 12:00 - 13:00

The aim of the Dutch suicide prevention helpline is to provide a safe and anonymous environment for help seekers to discuss and disclose their suicidal thoughts and behaviors. We choose to provide a helpline that is available for anyone thinking about suicide, in any way. But, given a limited capacity, that sometimes makes the helpline less available for people in acute dangerous situations or with concrete suicidal plans or actions. Considering the knowledge that over 400.000 people in The Netherlands have suicidal thoughts at one point, and 50.000 people attempt suicide, with 1900 deaths by suicide; shouldn’t we really focus only or at least more on help seekers with suicidal actions instead of thoughts and, if so, how do we differentiate between both in the helpline?
