Thomas Niederkrotenthaler, MD, PhD, MMSc, is Professor in Public Mental Health and head of the Public Mental Health Research Unit, Center for Public Health at the Medical University of Vienna. He is an internationally recognized expert in the area of media and suicide and has coined the Papageno effect which describes suicide preventive effects of media stories about the mastery of suicidal crises. He has published more than 170 papers in the area of suicide prevention. Thomas is currently a Vice President of IASP and the European Lead for IASP’s Partnerships for Life initiative -- a global effort with a focus on promoting national suicide prevention strategies.
