Expert Outreach to News and Entertainment Media Creators about Responsible Depictions of Suicide: Success and Challenges
August, 28 | 17:00 - 18:30

Globally produced entertainment content has potentially profound impact on its consumers. In the current age of media streaming, it also has the potential for a wider reach than ever before. Television shows and films, most often in the drama genre, frequently depict suicide and/or self-harm and, to prevent harm, the entertainment media must devise and present this content with a high level of caution. Media guidelines are helpful, but interpreting and applying these presents some distinct challenges for journalists and programme makers in creating compelling and engaging content that is realistic. Therefore, direct engagement between guideline creators, suicide and the media experts, and the entertainment media is crucial to facilitate best practice dissemination. In this lecture, Lorna Fraser will draw on the experiences of Samaritans in the UK and describe successes and challenges in conducting outreach to news and entertainment providers in relation to presenting suicide and self-harm in general, including focus on engagement about presentations of novel suicide methods. It will also share experience from the United States where daytime soap operas reach millions of people every day and in fact are seen around the world. For the first time ever a daytime series, The Young & The Restless, the longest running soap opera on TV, worked with Dr Dan Reidenberg to develop a storyline involving a lead character’s development of a mental health challenge leading to a suicide attempt and recovery. He worked with the writers, producers, directors, film crew and actors to ensure the storyline accurately depicted the issues for the character as well as supporting cast, both on the show and outside of the show. The team worked with Dr. Reidenberg on the first-ever daytime trigger warning and message from the cast shown before and after the two episodes involving the suicide attempt. The show recently won an Daytime Emmy Award for the Best Storyline.
