Association of the Feeling of Emptiness With Suicide Attempt and Reattempt
August, 29 | 14:00 - 15:30

The feeling of emptiness is a complex subjective experience relevant in different psychiatric diagnoses. It is related to lack of meaning, unfulfillment, disconnection and inner void. Emptiness has been associated with a wide range of suicidal thoughts and behaviors: ideation, intent, and attempts. Objectives: 1) Study the feeling of emptiness in a control sample vs people who have attempted suicide. 2) Compare the feeling of emptiness between single attempters and reattempters. Method: 150 healthy controls (90% female; M = 22.27 years) and 58 patients who had made at least one suicide attempt throughout their lives (90% female; M = 35.52 years) participated in this study. They answered a sociodemographic questionnaire and the feeling of emptiness scale (FES; Palomares et al., 2020). An ANCOVA test was used to compare the mean FES scores between controls and attempters using age as a covariate. The FES scores of the single attempters and reattempters were compared using a student's t test. Results: People with a suicide attempt scored significantly higher on all scales of the FES test when compared to controls (F = 200.96; p <.01 for the total score). Reattempters presented higher scores on all FES subscales except one when compared with single attempters (t =3.273; p < .01 for the total score). Conclusions: The feeling of emptiness seems to be a relevant characteristic in different facets of suicidal behavior in dynamic interaction with the history of suicide behavior. It is necessary to investigate this association in more depth given its promising results.
